My Dearest darling Addie,
Please forgive me for pushing you into the darkness. I am not entirely sure what will await us on the other side, or even if this note will survive the journey. I fear that no matter what I write here you will not believe a word of it. I will have to try my best to make you understand. The only words that come to mind are the ones I never got the chance to say to you. I love you…deeply, passionately, and always will until the end of time and beyond. Let me explain what I am sure you do not remember. We were married on the 31st day of June in 1819. Before the wedding, I was set against ever falling in love, but from the moment you said I do you captured my heart. I never realized how much I loved you until it was too late. When you died, my world stopped turning. I have been searching for you for so long. My head feared I would never find you again, but my heart never stopped believing. I should have looked in a library sooner. I know how much you love to read and write. I am so grateful that I found you. I am not sure how and I am not sure why, but we are given a second chance. I do not plan to waste it. See you soon my darling.
Love,
Alex
P.S. Take a deep breath darling. I know it is a lot to handle.
Addison folded the letter and tucked it safely back into the front cover of the book. She then turned to the first entry. It was written as if the writer was actually talking to the book. At the end of every entry, it was signed Addie. The first few entries described days that seemed to be relatively normal. Finally, about the sixteenth entry the man named Alex first appeared in writings.
February 5, 1819
Today, father introduced me to his business partner Alex. He seems too young to be working with my father. He has golden blond hair and deep green eyes. I find him to be rather handsome. He is probably one of the most handsome men I have ever laid eyes on. He is well aware of the fact that he is a handsome man. Uh his was such an arrogant man. When I met him, he seemed like such a gentleman. However, the moment I left the room I sneaked into the room next to and listened through the window. I heard father ask "What do you think of my daughter?" Then he replied "She is handsome, but not enough to tempt me from my single state.” Then I heard my father rustling through some papers. Finally, he asked. “Is this enough to tempt you?” After a little while, he responded. “This is a very extraordinary offer. I accept this and will gladly marry your daughter.” “Wonderful, I will tell her the news tomorrow. She will be a little wary at first, but she will see it is the best option for her.” “Are you going to tell her about the conditions we settled upon?” I heard Alex ask. “I will leave that decision up to you.” Alex thanked my father and left the house. I expect he will be joining our family for dinner tomorrow. I wonder what my father had to offer him to get him to marry me. How can my father think I will marry a man, who wouldn’t want me without the promise of riches?
Addie
Skimming through the next few entries, Addison felt a strange sense of Déjà vu. It felt like she had done the things she was reading, and had thought the thoughts that were written there. She wanted to keep reading, but her head was starting to hurt. She laid her head on her pillow to rest her eyes, and fell asleep the book still lying over her heart.
Ch. 4
Alex left the room confused and worried. Addison had recognized him, but she had no recollection of his name or their engagement. Was this her way of telling him she no longer wanted to get married? Could she be sincerely hurt and does not remember her life at all? Alex arrived at Lord Henry’s study without even realizing he was heading in that direction. Knocking to announce his presence, he waited until he heard Lord Henry shout “enter” before opening the door and walking into the room. Lord Henry was seated behind a hard wood desk. He looked nothing like the man who sat there yesterday. This man looked defeated. If this was what worrying for a beloved daughter did to a man, there was no way Alex would ever fall in love with Addison. If children were not necessary for carrying on the family name, this pain was enough for him to never have any. Lord Henry looked up as Alex sat down across from him. “How is she?” he asked. The look in his eyes showed he was desperate for good news.
Hoping his concern was not showing, Alex answered. “She is better than I expected. I believe that she will be well enough to get married in a fortnight.” The only question was if she still wanted to he tought, but didn’t say allowed.
“Good, Good.” Henry said. The worry removed from his eyes. “I will tell Lady Worthington to continue with the plans, and make sure everything is ready. That way Addison can work solely on getting better.”
